The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a statement on the 28th saying that one of the key points for the 2012 industrial energy conservation and comprehensive utilization was to organize the launch of the methanol car pilot: the issuance of notices on the pilot work of methanol vehicles, the holding of a pilot work initiation meeting, the deployment of pilot projects to start the national methanol car, and guidance. We will promote the preparation of pilot implementation plans for Shanxi Province, Shanghai Municipality, and Shaanxi Province, strengthen basic work, and actively and steadily push forward the pilot work of methanol vehicles.

The responsible person of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology stated that after 2-3 years of pilot work, the appraisal of the applicability, reliability, economy, safety, and environmental protection of high-proportion methanol vehicles must be completed; the relevant technical specifications for methanol car products must be clarified, and the main standards should be established. Methanol automobile related standards system; put forward the specifications for the transformation, construction and management of high-proportional methanol-fueled alternative fuel-related infrastructure; and put forward the methanol automobile industry policy recommendations.

The development and application of methanol vehicles in China began in the 1980s. Since 2009, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has initiated research on methanol vehicles, focusing on the research of high proportions of methanol fuels as alternatives to gasoline and diesel, and organizing special research groups on methanol vehicles. Comprehensive research was conducted on energy, environmental protection, safety, technology, and economic issues. The relevant agencies were commissioned to carry out comparative experiments on the detection of methanol fuel and gasoline, diesel, and ethanol gasoline emissions.
