Research Status of Abrasive Water Jet Polishing Technology (2)

3 Process Parameters on impact

polishing using an abrasive water jet for polishing, processing quality is affected by many factors, such as: jet pressure, the jet nozzle diameter, target distance, angle, nozzle diameter sand , shape and length, time of action, flow rate, size, shape and hardness of the abrasive particles, and properties of the material being processed.

(1) When the injection pressure is too large, the material removal amount is large, the polishing effect is not ideal; the ejection pressure is too small, the material is difficult to remove, and the polishing effect is not obtained. Therefore, the injection pressure should be optimized according to the nature and hardness of the material.

(2) The abrasive grain size has a great influence on the polishing effect. The smaller the abrasive grain size, the better the polishing quality, but the lower the polishing efficiency.

(3) Abrasive hardness has a significant effect on the polishing effect. In ordinary abrasive water jet processing, it is generally considered that the hardness of the abrasive is higher than the hardness of the workpiece in order to process the workpiece. However, in the polishing process of abrasive water jet, due to its different processing mechanism and high requirements on the quality of the machined surface, the amount of deformation of the abrasive itself is larger, that is, the smaller the hardness of the abrasive, the better the polishing effect.

(4) The processing time has no obvious influence on the polishing effect, and has a great influence on the material removal amount. The longer the processing time, the more material is removed.

(5) The influence of the target distance on the polishing effect has an optimal range of values. The target distance selection is too small. If the polishing is performed in the initial stage of the jet, the material removal rate is high, but the polishing effect on the workpiece is weak. The target distance selection is too large. If the polishing process is selected in the dissipation section of the jet, the material is not substantially removed, and the polishing effect is not good. It is generally believed that when polishing, the target distance should be chosen such that the jet polishes the workpiece in the basic section.

(6) The spray inclination has an optimum value relationship for the polishing effect. When the abrasive water jet is used to polish the workpiece, the polishing effect becomes better and better with the decrease of the injection inclination angle. When the reduction to a certain value, the polishing surface quality is optimized, and when the injection inclination angle is further reduced, the surface quality does not change much. However, the amount of material removal will become smaller as the spray dip decreases. If the jet tilt angle is too small (for example, the jet polishes the workpiece in a direction parallel to the surface of the workpiece), the amount of material removal is too small or substantially removed, and the polishing effect is not ideal.

(7) The diameter, shape and length of the sand nozzle affect the distribution of the abrasive in the jet. When polishing, the ideal abrasive distribution is that the abrasive is evenly distributed throughout the jet.

(8) Under the same polishing conditions, the higher the material hardness, the lower the surface roughness, and the smaller the material removal amount.
