Applicable to space environment Photovoltaic cells are under development

Photovoltaic companies Fraunhofer ISE and Azur Space Solar Power said that the two companies have used the III-V semiconductor to develop multi-junction solar photovoltaic cells for 15 years and signed an agreement to extend the partnership for 20 years. Fraunhofer and Azur Space plan to develop solar photovoltaic cells suitable for space environments within 20 years.

The two organizations will collaborate on the development of new manufacturing processes for multi-junction solar photovoltaic cells, supported by the European Space Agency (ESA-ESTEC), the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Dr Andreas Bett, deputy director and material of Fraunhofer ISE, director of the solar photovoltaic cell technology department, said: “The manufacturing process of multijunction solar cells developed by Fraunhofer ISE is the foundation of the Azur Space Solar Power industrial production now.” CEO of Azur Space Solar Power Klaus-Dieter Rasch said at Heilbronn: "The most important thing is that the long-term cooperation with Fraunhofer ISE has made Azur Space a global leader in the production of III-V solar photovoltaic cells."
