A research group at the University of Alberta in Canada recently developed a new type of battery using carbon nanotubes. Compared with the common lithium-ion batteries on the market today, the new batteries have faster charging speed, larger capacity, and longer service life. Dr. Cui Xinwei, Ph.D., of materials engineering at the University of Alberta in Canada who is in charge of this study said: “We have tried many different materials, but ultimately we decided to use carbon nanotubes. This new electrochemical technology has been developed. It can maximize the advantages of carbon nanotube materials, so that the battery can obtain higher energy density and power density."
The team used a new type of energy storage technology that has become a fluoridation-inducing process. The Physicist Organization Network reported on July 8 that the technology uses carbon nanotubes as cathodes to make fluoride-inducing cells. The advantage of using this material is its low cost and high safety and high efficiency. The new battery made of it has an energy output capability that is 5 to 8 times higher than the Li-ion battery currently on the market.
Cui Xinwei said: "Deciding to use carbon nanotubes to fabricate the cathode of a battery is a very quick process, but the experimental process is full of hardships. For this reason, we insisted for three years before we got the desired result." According to reports, the technology has already begun its commercialization process. It is expected that the first prototype will be launched at the end of 2014. Three versions of the battery will be developed in succession depending on the usage scenario. They are: a durable type with high power and long life cycle, a fast charge type that can be charged in a short time, and a large capacity type with large capacity and long use time.
Cui Xinwei said: “Although there is still a long way to go from real commercial use, we are on the right track. This is an exciting job and I hope it will be known to more people. New technologies may have some deficiencies, but we believe that in the future it will become a very competitive solution."
