According to a report by the American Physicist Network on April 11, Lin Yuming, a scientist at IBM, wrote in the April 8 issue of Nature that they developed a new graphene transistor with a cutoff. The frequency is 155 GHz, which is 50% faster than the 100 GHz graphene transistor introduced in February last year, and the block size is smaller. Graphene is a single-layer sheet structure having a thickness of only one carbon atom and can be peeled off from graphite. Graphene is not only the thinnest of the known materials, but also very strong and hard. As a simple substance, it delivers electrons at room temperature faster than known conductors, so it is expected to replace silicon as a top-level electronic material to make faster transistors. Previously, scientists have fabricated graphene devices by placing a thin layer of graphene over an insulating substrate, such as silicon dioxide, however, such substrates can impair the electrical properties of graphene. Now, scientists at IBM have found a way to minimize the impact of the substrate on the electrical properties of graphene. Scientists placed a "diamond-like carbon" on a silicon wafer substrate to create a new graphene transistor. This "diamond-like carbon" is a non-polar medium that does not capture or dissipate charge like silicon dioxide. Therefore, new graphene transistors display when temperature changes (including at very low temperatures like in space). Outstanding stability. IBM said the new high-frequency graphene transistors will be used in communications equipment such as mobile phones, the Internet or radar. Moreover, existing techniques for preparing standard silicon devices can also be used to fabricate new transistors, which means that new graphene transistors can be commercially produced at any time. The development of this transistor is part of a mission undertaken by IBM's Advanced Research Projects Agency of the US Department of Defense, which the US military hopes will help them develop high-performance wireless FM transistors.
