It was learned from the website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology had issued a notice regarding the release of the total tungsten production control targets for 2017. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has determined that total tungsten production will be controlled by 91,300 tons in 2017, which is the same as last year.

In the notice, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology pointed out that tungsten is a product that the country implements total production control and management, and any enterprise must produce without indicators and super targets. The right to allocate indicators may not be decentralized, and no additional indicators may be added. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology pointed out that the total production control index should be issued to enterprises that meet the national tungsten industry policy and industry planning requirements and have a mining license. The indicators should be inclined to key enterprises that meet the requirements of environmental protection, advanced technology and equipment, and high technical level. Enterprises that exceed the target production and have environmental pollution and safety hazards must reduce or cancel indicators.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology also stressed that companies that have no target or super-index production should immediately order suspension of production, and penalize enterprises that have illegally acquired or sold them according to law.
From the distribution of provinces (districts), a total of 17 provinces (regions) have obtained production targets. Among them, Jiangxi and Hunan provinces were 38,450 tons and 23,600 tons, respectively, and the sum of production targets accounted for half of the country's total. It is worth mentioning that Jiangxi Dayu County is the world famous “tungsten capital”, and Shizhu Park of Shuozhou, Hunan Province is known as the “World Museum of Nonferrous Metals”.

Tungsten is an irreplaceable basic material and strategic resource for the national economy and modern national defense. It has the reputation of “industrial teeth”. Tungsten is used in the military industry, aerospace industry, machining, metallurgy, oil drilling, mining tools, electronic communications, construction and other fields. In addition, tungsten is also a key material for lighting, electronics and other industries.

China’s tungsten resources rank first in the world and is also the largest producer of tungsten. According to the latest statistics from USGS (United States Geological Survey), the global reserves of tungsten resources are 3.3 million tons (metal quantities), of which China's tungsten resource reserves are 1.9 million tons (metal quantities), and the global share accounts for 58%.

However, due to the excessive use of tungsten resources, the global share of tungsten resources in China has declined in recent years. In order to curb the disorderly development of the domestic tungsten industry and protect scarce resources, the Ministry of Land and Resources began to issue “total control indicators” for tungsten concentrates to tungsten mines in the country in 2002.
