APEC publishes Singapore Declaration: Continue to adopt economic stimulus policy

The 17th Informal Leadership Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) issued the "Singapore Declaration" on November 15th, stating that APEC's common goal has not changed, that is, to support economic growth and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region through free and open trade and investment.
The declaration is called "Promoting Sustainable Growth, Close Regional Connections - Declaration of the 17th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting." The declaration covers how to promote sustainable growth, resist protectionism, support the multilateral trading system, accelerate regional economic integration, strengthen economic and technological cooperation, promote human security, combat corruption, improve management and transparency, and strengthen the role of APEC.
Conference host and Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said at the ceremony at the noon on the 15th that the Asia-Pacific region is leading the global economic recovery and can no longer return to the old path of “regular growth”. APEC needs a new growth strategy, namely balanced, inclusive and sustainable development. . This growth will ensure a lasting economic recovery, create jobs and benefit the people.
The declaration stated that APEC members will continue to adopt economic stimulus policies until the sustained economic recovery is clearly consolidated. Members will also implement the consensus of the G20 Pittsburgh Summit to work together to maintain a strong, sustainable and balanced growth momentum in the global economy and to develop a comprehensive long-term growth strategy next year.
Regarding the multilateral trading system, the declaration said that APEC member leaders reiterated that they will push the Doha Round negotiations to end in 2010 and achieve relevant results; commit themselves to the Bogor Goals and accelerate the economic integration of the Asia-Pacific region.
The Declaration listed the response to regional food security challenges as an APEC priority area and promised to strengthen health systems and work to prevent and control emerging infectious diseases worldwide.
The Declaration concludes that the enhancement of APEC's vitality is the key to achieving sustained recovery and meeting the economic challenges of the region in the 21st century. To this end, APEC members must establish a partnership based on common interests and appoint the first permanent term of the Executive Director of the Secretariat. It is an important first step. This will strengthen the capacity of the APEC Secretariat to meet the growing needs of economies and other key stakeholders.
After the declaration ceremony, APEC leaders had a working luncheon and the informal meeting was closed. The 18th APEC Leaders' Informal Meeting is scheduled to be held in Japan next year.
Founded in 1989, APEC has 21 members with a total population of 2.7 billion. The total economic output accounts for 54.2% of the world's total economy, and trade accounts for about 44% of the world's total trade. The APEC Leaders’ Informal Meeting is the highest level of this organization. Since 1993, the informal leadership meeting has been held once a year and is held by members in turn.
