The World Trade Organization (WTO) warned on the 1st that global trade protectionism is intensifying and it is expected that global trade volume will shrink by 10% this year.
The WTO expects global trade to shrink by 10% this year, with developed countries down 14% and developing countries down 7%. The WTO’s last forecast in March this year predicted that global trade volume will decrease by 9% this year.
The WTO also warned that there have been more and more global trade restrictions and distortions in the past three months. Excluding the trade protection measures triggered by the H1N1 flu, the global new trade protectionist measures are more than twice the trade openness policy.
The WTO also expressed concern about the economic stimulus policies adopted by countries in response to the financial crisis. They believe that some policies lack transparency, so it is difficult to judge whether these policies will distort the market or compete fairly.
To this end, the WTO has called for the G20 to formulate and announce relevant exit strategies as soon as possible so that market competition can return to normal.
