Perovskite solar cell efficiency is new high

A solar cell made of perovskite, an increasingly popular and cheap material, will be on the market next year. The physicist organization network reported on the 9th that the average efficiency of this type of solar energy capture battery is about 20%. A recent paper in the journal Nature and Materials reported in detail the new designs of scientists from the University of California at Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which achieved an average steady-state efficiency of 18.4% to 21.7%, and 26% Peak efficiency. These figures create new records for perovskite solar cells.

Perovskite solar cells are made of a mixture of organic and inorganic elements that capture sunlight and convert it into electricity, as is common with silicon-based solar cells. However, perovskite photovoltaic devices are easier to fabricate on flexible substrates than silicon. At present, the conversion efficiency of polysilicon solar cells for the vast majority of devices and homes in the market is between 10% and 20%. Although the purity of the purest silicon solar cells can reach 25%, the manufacturing cost is extremely expensive.

The success of perovskite solar cells depends on a new approach that combines two perovskite solar cell materials. The researchers described that the solar cell structure produced by the new method is a bit like a car road. The graphene aerogel acts as a solid anchor like a solid crushed stone substrate. The two perovskite layers are finer as deposited on it. The gravel layer and the sand layer, the hexagonal boron nitride layer, allow the two perovskite materials to work together, and the gallium nitride layer is like an asphalt layer for the top of the road. Each alternately absorbs different wavelengths or colors in sunlight and then fuses into a "gradual bandgap" solar cell that absorbs nearly the entire spectrum of visible light. The reason why the attempt to merge the two perovskite materials earlier failed is due to the fact that they have reduced each other's electronic performance, and the new method has successfully solved this problem.

The paper's first author, Ornol O'Keeen, said: "It has the potential to be the cheapest photovoltaic power plant on the market and can access any home solar system." (Reporter Fanglin Lin)
