A group of researchers has developed a faster and simpler method of making sulphur polymers that can reduce the cost of large-scale production. This method was published in the journal Nature.

Two magazines, Chemistry and AngewandteChemie, opened the door to creating new products from polymers, and the new products produced much less hazardous waste. The researchers tested the reaction and added a newly developed catalyst to the SuFEx reaction, commonly known as sulfur (VI) fluoride exchange, to accelerate its reaction, from small to water bottles and mobile phone cases to medical devices and bulletproof glass.

When new useful molecules are discovered, the simple and effective reactions that can be used initially by chemists are few, not to mention the need to meet the cost-effective industrial production requirements. In 2001, Nobel laureate K. Barry Sharpless introduced an organic chemical concept called “click chemistry,” which describes a controllable, highly reactive, high-yield reaction that does not require much purification.

According to the example under natural conditions, the click chemistry reaction follows a simple protocol, using readily available starting materials, and using a benign starting reagent under mild reaction conditions. Click chemistry has become a valuable tool for generating large libraries of potentially useful compounds and seeks to discover new drugs and materials for the industry.

Researchers have shown that the synthesis of polysulfate is dependent on the chemical technology of the SuFEx reaction.

A team from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory specializing in nanoscale scientific research, the scientist at the Berkeley Lab, and the team led by the Sharps Institute (TSRI) Professor Sharpless and Wu Peng formed a team to work together. . The team used SuFEx to click on chemical reactions to create long-chain linked sulfur-containing molecules called polysulfates and polysulfonates.

Liu Yi, director of organic synthesis engineering at Molecular Foundry, said: “Click chemistry is a powerful tool for discovering new materials, but synthetic chemists often fail to characterize the polymers they form. We can provide a wide range of expertise and tools. Used to expand the scope and impact of research."

The SuFFIx reaction was introduced in 2014 as a new click response. This reaction produces new chemical bonds quickly and reliably and links the compounds to sulfate or sulfonate. While polysulfates have shown great potential as competitors, such as strong plastics for spectacle lenses and water bottles, they are rarely used in industrial applications due to the lack of reliable and easily scalable synthetic methods.

Newly developed chemical technology can make polysulfate plastics more competitive than polycarbonate for the manufacture of safety goggles as shown

The polymer is assembled from smaller molecules, just as a necklace is made up of the same beads. When using the SuFEx technology to make polysulfonate "necklaces", the researchers used vinylsulfonyl fluoride-aniline and bisphenol ether as good "beads" and found that using fluoride as a catalyst can complete the previous slow reaction. Click "." The researchers found that high-efficiency reactions benefited from conversion rates as high as 99%. It took less than an hour from the start of the reaction to the formation of the product.

The researchers found that the new reaction required 100 to 1000 times less catalyst than other known methods, which could significantly reduce hazardous waste. Fluoride salts are also much less corrosive than previously used catalysts, and the broader starting substrate acts as a "bead," the researchers said, hoping they could lead them through a series of industrial processes.

Liu said: "There are still many new polymers that have not been widely used. By reducing waste, improving product purity and reducing costs, this reaction is more widely used in the industry."
